Football is back! That should be enough for our first installment of MCM for the 2016 NFL season. Unfortunately for my editor, I’m going to write more.
Week 1 was unbelievably fun for the casual fan, and especially for fantasy. Two games went into the 60s in points scored, there were a couple of huge comebacks, and of course, the Lions won.
Quarterback - Jameis Winston (TB).
Winston threw for 4 TDs and looked the part of a franchise QB. I have been leading the charge for Winston all off season, so it’s nice that he came up big for me (and TB). Winston has always been in my top 10 QBs, and he should start creeping up everyone else’s list now also.
Running Back - Ameer Abdullah (Det).
Abdullah and Theo Riddick look like a real force to be reckoned with in Detroit. Abdullah had 12 carries for 63 yards, 5 catches for 57 yards and a TD. If Abdullah is going to get double digit carries and that many catches every week, he’s a sure fire RB2 in all leagues.
Wide Receiver - Kelvin Benjamin (Car).
I wrote off Benjamin in this matchup, and he proved me very wrong. I was glad to see him get back (I’m a FSU fan) and play well. Benjamin had 6 catches on 12 targets for 91 yards and a TD. The TD was against one of the best corners in the league, and it was a simple jump ball. Benjamin is a lock-and-load WR2 for the rest of the season with upside to be a low-end WR1. Start him from here on out.
Tight End - Dwayne Allen (Ind).
Dwayne Allen got…Dwayne Allened by Jack Doyle. Allen was easily the best TE on the field for Indy, but Doyle vultured 2 TDs from him. That is what Allen used to do to Coby Fleener. Even with that, Allen did score a TD and had 4 catches on 6 targets for 53 yards. That doesn’t sound like much, but in the current TE landscape, that was elite.
I had a blast week 1, and I can only hope that I continue to have this much fun throughout the year. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did this week.
