We should never hit the panic button Week 1, but there is definitely information to be taken from it. This is the first week we get to see what NFL coaches have been plotting and scheming in secret come to light to try to win in real NFL competition. Gameplans and depth charts are revealed and Week 1 might be your chance to undo a poor draft decision.

Alex Smith KC 31 Week 1 Points. Available in 72% of leagues. Perhaps all Alex Smith needed was highly touted rookie breathing down his neck to cease his check-downing ways! Smith has always been a very efficient signal caller, but his opening night performance was something to behold. 80% Completion percentage, 368 yards and 4 TD’s against a good New England defense bumped Alex Smith to the top of the QB adds this week.
DeShone Kizer CLE 18.6 Week 1 Points. Available in 92% of leagues. Tyrod Taylor version 2.0? Kizer rewarded the few fantasy owners that rolled the dice starting him with a top 10 performance for the week. Six points came via a TD run but that is going to be the norm for the rookie from Notre Dame.
Jared Goff LAR 16.4 Week 1 Points. Available in 95% of leagues. Looks like I’m going to eat crow on this one TJ. Granted it was against an abysmal Colts secondary but Goff definitely showed he deserves to be considered in 2 QB and 14+ team leagues.
Tarik Cohen CHI 25.3 Week 1 points. Available in 92% of leagues. If you are Jordan Howard owner this needs to be your first waiver priority. Even if you aren’t, Cohen is worth the consideration. The Bears showed that Cohen is the definite #2 and change of pace back. We may have a poor man’s Freeman-Coleman situation in the Windy City with both RB’s being fantasy relevant…especially with their top 2 WR’s going down.
Shane Vereen NYG 14.1 Week 1 points. Available in 68% of leagues. If the Giants offensive line stays so dreadful, their running game will continue be virtually non-existent. Enter Shane Vereen. Garnering 10 targets from the backfield in Week 1 he will be more like a WR4 you can plug into a RB spot on your roster.
Kerwynn Williams ARI 8.2 Week 1 points. Available in 99% of leagues. As of the writing of this, things are not looking for many of our number 1 overall pick David Johnson. Kerwynn Williams is no DJ…but he is a suitable off-brand replacement and should be your #1 priority if you are a Johnson owner.
Handcuffs/fliers you should consider: Mike Tolbert BUF, Chris Carson SEA, Tyler Ervin HOU, Malcolm Brown LAR, Buck Allen BAL
Kenny Golladay DET 22.9 Week 1 points. Available in 92% of leagues. It looks as if Golladay has secured Anquan Boldin’s old #3 WR spot in Detroit, which gets more usage than the #2 WR for many teams. Golladay may never repeat his 2 TD performance this year but he will certainly be thrown too in a high volume pass offense.
Mohamed Sanu ATL 10.7 Week 1 points. Available in 73% of leagues. He’s definitely not the sexiest name…but he is a starting WR on a very productive offense. Matt Ryan targeted Sanu 9 times on Sunday and he has been a consistent work horse for whatever offense he plays for and is worth an add if you need some stability at the WR position.
Paul Richardson SEA 9.9 Week 1 points. Available in 97% of leagues. Sneaky play and with upcoming matchups against San Francisco, Tennessee, and Indianapolis the matchups are definitely in his favor.
Deep league considerations: Jermaine Kearse NYJ, Marquise Goodwin SF, Ryan Grant WAS, Roger Lewis NYG, Bennie Fowler III DEN
Charles Clay BUF 15.3 Week 1 points. Available in 93% of leagues. Clay has always been Taylor’s favorite pass catcher. Now that Buffalo got rid of BOTH of their top WR’s in the offseason Clay’s usage should only increase. Clay should be rostered in every league.
Jesse James PIT 22.1 Week 1 points. Available in 95% of leagues. Even in the deepest of leagues James was written off when Pittsburgh traded for Vance MacDonald. Well, if Week 1 was any indication, we acted too soon. Big Ben targeted The Outlaw (my personal nickname for him, not official) 8 times 2 of which resulted in touchdowns.
Evan Engram NYG 8.4 Week 1 points. Available in 80% of leagues. If you are in a league with me I will tell you Engram is probably not available. I have been high on Engram all offseason. The same reasoning for Shane Vereen applies to the rookie from Ole Miss. Eli is going to throw A LOT, much of the time under pressure. Engram showed in week 1 he is one of his safety targets.
Keep on radar: Zach Miller and Dion Sims in CHI, George Kittle SF, Seth DeValve CLE
Oakland 1 Week 1 point. Available in 96% of leagues. Held a very dynamic Tennessee offense to only 16 points and play the dismal Jets in week 2.
Dallas 11 Week 1 points. Available in 92% of leagues. Defensive backfield was much better than anticipated. With next 3 weeks being the less than impressive Denver QB situation, what looks to be a David Johnson-less Arizona team, and the Rams, may be a Defense worth streaming.
